Where to place NFC chips in your venue so they actually get used

The technology is the easy part; placement is what decides whether your NFC chips get used or ignored. After installing TapMallorca in venues across Mallorca, this is what we've learned about where to put them.

The menu chip: on the table, in plain sight

Stuck on the corner of the table or on a small stand next to the napkin holder — where the customer naturally rests their phone. Avoid the edge where plates go (it ends up covered) and the side (nobody sees it). A mini sign saying "Tap here to see the menu" multiplies usage in the first weeks.

The reviews chip: by the till, not on the table

You ask for the review at the moment of payment, while the experience is fresh. At the table the customer hasn't finished yet; at the till the gesture is natural: they pay with their phone and tap the chip right after. If you charge at the table with a card reader, a small stand next to it works just as well.

The WiFi chip: at the bar or the entrance

It's the first thing someone coming to work or spend the afternoon looks for. At the bar (cafés) or at the entrance/reception (hotels) it's found on its own, without asking staff.

Two physical mistakes to avoid

Metal surfaces: metal interferes with the NFC signal — use the stands with a spacer that we include. And height: the chip should be within reach without standing up; an eye-level sign with the chip below works better than a sticker lost in a corner.
